Credentials are verified with PayPal and saved in secure Cloudflare storage. PayPal and Stripe can be connected independently or together; saving one never replaces the other.
PayPal webhook setup
A webhook is a server-to-server notification PayPal sends when an order or payment changes. PayPal sends it even if the buyer closes their browser. CILIALIGHT verifies PayPal’s signature before accepting the notification. This is separate from the Client ID and Secret; it will not make the PayPal button appear by itself.
Subscribe to these events: CHECKOUT.ORDER.APPROVED, CHECKOUT.PAYMENT-APPROVAL.REVERSED, PAYMENT.CAPTURE.PENDING, PAYMENT.CAPTURE.COMPLETED, PAYMENT.CAPTURE.DENIED, PAYMENT.CAPTURE.REFUNDED, and PAYMENT.CAPTURE.REVERSED.
- In PayPal Developer Dashboard → Apps & Credentials, choose the same environment as the PayPal connection above and open the matching app.
- Find Webhooks (or Add Webhook), paste the URL shown above, and subscribe to every event listed above. Save the webhook.
- Copy the Webhook ID PayPal displays for that saved webhook. It is different from the Client ID.
- Paste the Webhook ID below, keep the same environment selected above, then click Verify & Save Webhook ID.
- Repeat in the other environment only if you also connect that environment. Sandbox and Live each have their own webhook and Webhook ID.

The current checkout captures approved orders directly through PayPal and sends order emails. This webhook validates PayPal signatures, acknowledges subscribed events, and writes event details to Cloudflare function logs. It does not create a second capture or add PayPal transactions to the Stripe Orders table.
Step-by-step: set up PayPal Checkout
Before you start
For real payments, the store owner needs a verified PayPal Business account. A personal PayPal account can be used to create a Developer Dashboard login, but it must be upgraded and verified as a Business account before connecting Live credentials.
Keep the Client Secret private. Enter it only in the password field on this admin page. Do not email it, paste it into a support chat, or add it to the website code.
A. Connect Sandbox first (test payments, no real money)
- Open the PayPal Developer Dashboard. Sign in with the PayPal account that owns the store, or create a PayPal account and sign in.
- In the dashboard, open Apps & Credentials.
- Select the Sandbox environment tab. Sandbox credentials and Live credentials are different; do not mix them.
- Under REST API apps, select the default app if one is shown, or click Create App.
- If creating an app, enter a recognisable name such as CILIALIGHT Storefront, select the Sandbox business account when asked, then create the app.
- On the app details page, copy its Client ID. Reveal and copy the Secret as well. These two values must come from the same app and the Sandbox tab.
- Return to this page. Set Environment to Sandbox / Test. Paste the Client ID and Secret into their matching fields.
- Click Verify & Connect PayPal. Wait for the success message and confirm the status says Connected · Sandbox test mode. If verification fails, check the environment tab, copy both values again, and make sure there are no spaces before or after them.
- Open the store basket, add a product, and confirm a PayPal button appears. Complete a test purchase using a Personal Sandbox account, not the Sandbox business seller account.
To find test buyer credentials: Developer Dashboard → Testing Tools → Sandbox Accounts → select the personal account’s three-dot menu → View/Edit Account. Use that email and password to sign in when the PayPal Sandbox checkout asks you to log in. The payment is simulated and does not move real money.
B. Connect Live (real customer payments)
- Finish the Sandbox test above first. Confirm the order completes and the customer and store order emails arrive.
- Make sure the store has a verified PayPal Business account. Complete any identity, business, email, or account verification PayPal requests in the Business Dashboard.
- Open the Developer Dashboard → Apps & Credentials, then switch to the Live tab.
- Under REST API apps, create or select the app for the live store. If creating it, name it clearly (for example, CILIALIGHT Storefront).
- Copy the Live Client ID and reveal and copy the Live Secret. These are separate from the Sandbox values, even if the app names look the same.
- Return to this admin page. Choose Live / Real payments, replace the Client ID with the Live Client ID, enter the Live Secret, and click Verify & Connect PayPal.
- Check for the success message and verify the status says Connected · Live payments enabled. From this point onward, PayPal checkouts charge real customers.
- Make a small real purchase from the storefront and confirm it appears in the PayPal Business account’s activity and that the order emails arrive. Refund the test order from PayPal if appropriate.
If the connection saves but checkout does not update
- Reload this admin page. The connection status and saved Client ID should still be present.
- Reload the storefront basket. Each connected provider appears as its own payment option; Stripe and PayPal can both be enabled at the same time.
To stop PayPal payments, click Disconnect here. To change between test and real payments later, enter the matching credentials for the environment you select and connect again.
